A

An abdominal retractor is a surgical hand instrument that is used to temporarily separate the edges of the wound when the abdominal cavity is opened, thus exposing the surgical field. It typically consists of a blunt, flat, usually curved blade and a handle, is made of stainless steel and is intended as a reusable instrument for temporary use in abdominal surgery.

Abdominal wall dilation refers to the gradual expansion of the tissue layers of the abdominal wall, usually with the help of a blunt or conical trocar. This creates access to the abdominal cavity without cutting tissue, which spares nerves and blood vessels and reduces postoperative pain.

Adhesiolysis is a surgical procedure for dissolving adhesions between organs or tissue structures. It is used to restore mobility, function and anatomical conditions, for example in the context of minimally invasive gynecological procedures, in which instruments and devices such as hysteroscope, laparoscope, camera, light source, biopsy forceps, fine scissors, biopsy/grasping forceps as well as monopolar or bipolar systems/electrodes can be used, depending on the requirements.

The Albarran deflector/steering lever is a work insert that is inserted into the shaft of a cystoscope together with the endoscope and is used for the targeted deflection and guidance of instruments in the working channel.

The AlphaActiveGrip Ergo is a bipolar instrument system for minimally invasive surgery, which consists of a handle, shaft and interchangeable instrument inserts and enables flexible application in tissue manipulation thanks to its modular design and rotatable components.

AlphaArthro is a family of instruments and systems for arthroscopic procedures that was specifically developed for minimally invasive joint surgery and enables precise use in different joints through a coordinated portfolio of sheaths and instruments.

An amputation knife is a surgical instrument with a long, stable blade that has been specially developed for the precise cutting of soft tissues during amputations. It enables the surgeon to efficiently separate large layers of tissue with cleanly guided, controlled incisions.

An anatomical tip refers to an instrument tip whose shape is adapted to the natural anatomical structures. It enables precise, tissue-friendly gripping or working and improves control during the surgical procedure.

Anatomical structures are the physical components of the human body, such as organs, tissues, vessels and bones, in their spatial arrangement. They form the basis for diagnostic assessments and surgical interventions, especially in imaging medicine.

Appendectomy is a surgical procedure to surgically remove the appendix of the appendix. It is usually performed to treat acute appendicitis and can be open or minimally invasive.

If the procedure is minimally invasive, trocars, laparoscopes, cameras, light sources, atraumatic grasses, scissors, dissectors, monopolar instruments, clip applicators as well as suction and irrigation instruments can be used. If the procedure is open, instruments such as scalpels, scissors, tissue grasping forceps, tweezers, clamps, retractors and needle holders can be used.

A specialized endoscope used for the examination and treatment of joints, which is inserted into the joint through a small incision in the skin and provides a direct view of the joint structures.

Arthroscopy pumps are medical devices that introduce and discharge fluid into a joint in a controlled manner during arthroscopic procedures. They provide constant pressure and clear vision in the surgical field by flushing out blood, tissue particles, and cloudiness.

Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure in which a thin endoscope (also called an arthroscope) with a camera is inserted into a joint through small skin incisions to visualize internal structures. At the same time, diagnostic examinations and therapeutic interventions can be performed in a gentle, tissue-sparing manner.

Arthroscopy instruments include, among others: arthroscopes, sheath systems, punches, scissors, grasping forceps, and suturing instruments.

An aspiration and injection cannula is a medical instrument that is used to suck out (aspiration) or administer (injection) fluids in a controlled manner. It has a Luer-Lock connection and a fine needle, so that both precise removal and targeted application are possible.

Perfusion assessment describes the medical evaluation of blood flow to tissues or organs. It is used to assess tissue vitality and is often performed intraoperatively using imaging techniques such as NIR fluorescence.

Autoclavability describes the ability of a medical instrument to withstand the sterilization process in an autoclave, that is, under saturated steam at high temperature and pressure, without damage. Materials or devices that are autoclavable retain their function and shape without being damaged or losing quality.

An autoclavable camera head is a medical camera head that is used for image transmission in endoscopy and can withstand sterilization in an autoclave at high temperatures, pressure, and steam. This means that it can be safely reused and meets high hygienic requirements in the operating room.

A device for hygienic reprocessing that sterilizes medical instruments using pressure and hot steam.

Dissecting knives are precise surgical knives that are mainly used for fine cutting and exposing of tissue during anatomical preparations and dissections. They have a very sharp, often slender blade that allows controlled and clean cuts without unnecessarily damaging surrounding structures.

A bacterial hydrophobic filter is a medical filter that retains bacteria and microorganisms while allowing gases or air to pass through. Due to its water-repellent properties, it also prevents liquids from penetrating connected medical devices or systems.

The spherical electrode is an active surgical instrument for the targeted coagulation of soft tissue in the context of endoscopic resectoscopy procedures, especially in gynecology and urology. It is used for haemostasis and selective thermal tissue obliteration using high-frequency current.

A banana knife is a curved arthroscopic cutting instrument whose shape enables controlled cutting of soft tissue and meniscal tissue in hard-to-reach joint areas. It is used primarily in knee arthroscopy to perform precise resections along curved anatomical structures.

The webbing loop electrode is a monopolarly used electrode in the form of a flat metal loop, which is mainly used for cutting and removing tissue. It enables an even incision and is often used for resections with simultaneous coagulation.

Bariatrics is a medical specialty that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of severe overweight (obesity) and its secondary diseases. A central component is bariatric surgery, in which surgical procedures are performed on the gastrointestinal tract for sustainable weight loss.

Bariatric instruments include, but are not limited to: laparoscopes, monopolar and bipolar instrument systems, endo-retractors, clip applicators, gripping forceps, coagulation forceps and needle holders.

Bariatric surgery includes surgical procedures for the treatment of morbid obesity in which the stomach and/or digestive tract are surgically altered. The aim is sustainable weight loss as well as the improvement or cure of obesity-related comorbidities such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

The barrel electrode (also known as roller/roller electrode) is an active surgical instrument for the coagulation and vaporization of soft tissue in the context of endoscopic resectoscopy procedures, especially in gynecology and urology. It is used for hemostasis, surface ablation and controlled tissue sclerotherapy using high-frequency current.

The barrier system is a type of filter that has a durable, maintenance-free filter element that enables air exchange while reliably retaining microorganisms. It is used exclusively with non-perforated bottoms and does not require a safety lid, which simplifies the sterilization process.

Basket punches are arthroscopic cutting and grasping instruments with a basket-shaped jaw used to resect and remove meniscal, cartilage, or soft tissue. They enable controlled tissue resection while securely capturing the resected material during arthroscopic procedures.

A bayonet lock is a mechanical plug-in connection in which two parts are quickly and securely locked together by insertion and a short twisting motion. This simple twist-and-lock mechanism also allows the connection to be released just as quickly, enabling efficient and stable handling. In medical technology, this mechanism is used, among other applications, on arthroscopy sheaths.

Biliary structures are anatomical components of the biliary system, which include the gallbladder and the intra- and extrahepatic bile ducts. They are used for the transport, storage and drainage of bile and are of clinical importance especially in hepatobiliary and laparoscopic procedures.

The totality of the anatomical structures involved in bile, including the bile tubules and bile ducts located in the liver, as well as the extrahepatic bile ducts and the gallbladder, which together allow the outflow of bile produced in the liver into the small intestine.

Biopsy forceps is a medical gripping instrument that is used to specifically take tissue samples from organs or mucous membranes. It enables a controlled and precise biopsy for diagnostic examination with minimal tissue stress.

A biopsy punch is a medical instrument used to specifically collect small tissue samples by cutting or punching. It enables precise sample collection for histological examinations with minimal tissue damage.

Bipolar coagulation forceps is a bipolar electrosurgical instrument in which both electrodes are integrated in the tips of the tweezers and the current flows through the tissue exclusively between these tips. It is used for targeted hemostasis and enables precise, controlled coagulation while protecting the surrounding tissue.

Bipolar Connection Cable is a special connection cable that connects bipolar electrosurgical instruments to the RF generator and directs the current to both electrodes of the instrument in a targeted manner. It ensures safe, controlled energy transfer and is designed with different connectors depending on the instrument.

Bipolar resectoscope electrodes are active electrosurgical instruments designed for cutting and/or coagulating tissues during endoscopic urological or gynecological procedures. The high-frequency current flows exclusively between the two electrode poles within the electrode and through the intermediate target tissue.

Bipolar forceps are an electrosurgical instrument in which both electrodes are integrated into the tips of the tweezers and the electric current flows through the tissue exclusively between these tips. It is primarily used for precise coagulation and enables targeted, tissue-friendly application without the flow of electricity through the rest of the body.

A bipolar instrument system is an electrosurgical system in which current flows between two closely adjacent electrodes on the instrument and is directed through the tissue in between. Systems such as the AlphaActiveGrip Ergo are primarily used for precise coagulating, cutting or dissecting tissue and, compared to monopolar systems, reduce the risk of current propagation in the body.

Bipolar irrigation forceps are bipolar electrosurgical instruments that have an integrated irrigation channel in addition to the electrodes in the tips of the tweezers. The rinse, usually with saline solution, improves electrical contact, reduces tissue adhesion and supports controlled, tissue-sparing coagulation.

The bipolar technique is an electrosurgical procedure in which the electric current flows through the tissue exclusively between two electrodes of an instrument. As a result, the current effect is locally limited, which enables precise coagulation and protects the surrounding tissue.

Bipolar resectoscope work elements are mechanical instrument elements for acquiring, guiding and actuating bipolar electrodes as well as for electrical connection to the RF generator, with the radio frequency current flowing exclusively between the two poles of the electrode in the target tissue. Such work elements are also implemented in the AlphaNautilus system.

A bladder syringe is a medical syringe for rinsing the urinary bladder, which is used both in conjunction with bladder catheters and with the irrigation connection of a cystoscopy shaft. It is used for the introduction and suction of irrigation fluids and is used in particular during urological procedures and examinations.

Scalpel blade removal pliers are special surgical forceps used to safely remove scalpel blades from the blade holder. They enable controlled, contactless handling of used blades and thus reduce the risk of injury and infection for the operating room staff.

Bone surgery is a branch of surgery that deals with surgical interventions on bones, e.g. for the treatment of fractures, misalignments, tumors or degenerative changes. It includes procedures such as cutting, shaping, stabilizing, or replacing bone using specialized orthopedic instruments and implants. These procedures can sometimes be used with meniscus knives, bone retaining staples, cartilage grasping forceps, elevators, osteotomes, gouges, bone files and much more.

A bonecutter is a rotating or cutting surgical instrument used in arthroscopy for the precise removal and shaping of bone tissue. It is usually used with a motor-driven shaver system and enables controlled work in tight joint spaces.

The intestinal gripping forceps is a laparoscopic gripping instrument for the atraumatic grasping and holding of intestinal tissue during surgical procedures. It has specially shaped, often toothed or double-movable jaws to securely fix the intestine without injuring it.

A flexible endoscope bridge is a connector that couples multiple ports, such as irrigation, suction, or working channels, to a flexible endoscope. It enables the controlled guidance of liquids or gases and supports the safe operation of the endoscope during the procedure.

C

A C-mount connector is a standardized screw connector for connecting camera heads to lenses or optical adapters in medical imaging. It enables a flexible combination of different endoscopes and is often used in endoscopic camera systems.

The camera control unit is the central control unit of an endoscopic camera system that processes the image signals captured by the camera head. It controls functions such as image modes, light adjustment, signal processing, and the output of image and video data to monitors or recording systems.

Camera heads are central components of endoscopic visualization systems and are used to record and transmit high-resolution images from the surgical field. Depending on the version, different variants are available, such as autoclavable camera heads for direct processing, NIR camera heads for extended visualization of perfusion and structures, and models with different resolutions such as Full HD or 4K.

Cartilage rasps are surgical instruments used in arthroscopy to smooth and contour cartilage surfaces. They allow gentle removal of irregular or damaged cartilage areas in order to restore an even joint surface.

Cartilage smoothing refers to an arthroscopic procedure in which roughened or damaged cartilage surfaces are smoothed using specialized instruments such as rasps, files, or knives to create an even surface. The goal is to remove loose cartilage fragments and stabilize the joint surface in order to reduce pain and improve gliding function.

Conformity assessment procedure to demonstrate that a product meets the applicable European requirements (e.g. under the MDR) and thus creates the prerequisite for CE marking and placing on the market in the European Economic Area.

Labelling that confirms that a product complies with the applicable European requirements for safety, health protection and the environment and can therefore be placed on the market in the European Economic Area.

Ceramic tip insulation refers to the electrically insulating coating of the active tip of a monopolar or bipolar RF instrument. It protects the surrounding tissue from uncontrolled current emissions and ensures that the RF energy is only released at the desired point of action.

A ceramic plate is a ceramic insulation surface that is often placed on one side of the instrument in electrosurgical instruments. It prevents unwanted power transmission, reduces heat propagation and contributes to safe, controlled application.

Ceramic scissors are surgical scissors whose cutting edges are coated with a ceramic or ceramic carbide coating to achieve increased edge retention and wear resistance. They enable particularly precise and durable cutting of tissue, reduce friction and corrosion and are designed as reusable instruments for clinical use.

The Cernicalo Needle Holder is a laparoscopic needle holder for precise sewing, which ensures a secure hold of the needle with carbide inserts. It has a modular design, is available in different lengths, diameters and handle variants and enables ergonomic, controlled seam guidance during minimally invasive procedures - and this is also thanks to the lightweight aluminium handle.

Chalazion tweezers are special ophthalmological instruments that are used in the removal of a chalazion (eyelid node) and stably fix the affected eyelid area. Due to their design with a plate and an opening, they allow for safe compression and improve visibility and access during the procedure.

The cholangiography fixation clamp is a laparoscopic instrument for fixing a catheter during cholangiography. It is used to keep the catheter secure and positionally stable in order to enable controlled imaging of the bile ducts.

Cholecystectomy is a surgical procedure to surgically remove the gallbladder, usually due to gallstones or inflammatory diseases. It is often performed minimally invasively with instruments such as trocars, laparoscopes, light sources, cameras, atraumatic grasspers, dissectors, monopolar instrument systems and clip applicators and serves to permanently eliminate bile duct-related complaints.

A chondro-pick is an arthroscopic instrument used for microfracture treatment of cartilage defects to stimulate the formation of repair cartilage. In this process, the subchondral bone plate is intentionally perforated so that stem cells from the bone marrow can migrate into the defect.

Chondroplasty is an arthroscopic procedure for smoothing roughened or damaged cartilage surfaces within a joint. The goal is to remove loose cartilage fragments, reduce friction, and improve joint function and pain symptoms.

The claw gripper is a laparoscopic gripping instrument with claw-shaped tips that is used to securely grasp and hold tissue or foreign bodies. Due to its shape, it enables stable fixation and controlled manipulation during minimally invasive surgical procedures.

A cleaning gun is a manual cleaning device that is powered by water or compressed air and is used to thoroughly clean medical instruments, both inside and out. With replaceable adapters, it enables the targeted flushing of channels, cavities and connections during treatment.

The click-stop system refers to a mechanical locking mechanism that fixes defined positions of an instrument by means of an audible and tangible click. It ensures stable adjustment, facilitates handling and increases safety during the surgical procedure.

The clip pliers, a synonym for clip applicator, is a laparoscopic instrument for the safe application of titanium clips to vessels or tissue structures. It enables controlled closure and fixation, e.g. for hemostasis or for securing structures during minimally invasive procedures.

Clip applicators, also known as clip forceps, are surgical instruments used to securely attach metal or polymer clips to vessels, tissues, or hollow structures in order to permanently seal or ligate them. They are mainly used in open and minimally invasive surgery, for example to stop bleeding or close ducts, and are tied to a defined clinical area of application.

A CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) sensor is an electronic image sensor that converts light into digital image signals and is used in medical camera systems for image acquisition. It is characterized by low energy consumption, fast image processing and high image quality.

Coagulation refers to the process of blood clotting or the targeted obliteration of tissue by controlled heat exposure. In electrosurgery, it is used to stop bleeding and safely close tissue.
Depending on the application, electrosurgical instruments such as monopolar or bipolar electrodes and instruments, bipolar tweezers or coagulation probes are used for coagulation.

Coagulation forceps is a surgical instrument used to grasp tissue and target hemostasis by applying high-frequency current. Systems such as the AlphaActiveGrip Ergo are used in minimally invasive surgery and enable the coagulation of small blood vessels directly on the tissue.

A coaxial connector is a connector in which the signal is routed through a central conductor surrounded by an external shield to minimize interference. In medical technology, it ensures a stable, low-interference connection between the RF generator and the instrument.

The Cohen intrauterine tube is an instrument intended for transcervical insertion to manually manipulate and assess the uterus during gynecological diagnostic or surgical procedures. The product allows the user to move the uterus manually.

Stricture knives are fine, cutting instrument inserts for the optical urethrotome, which are used for the controlled incision of a urethral stricture. Depending on the access and desired cut, they are available in a straight shape, semi-circular or with a serrated edge, whereby the serrated edge supports particularly precise and secure guidance through scarred tissue.

Colectomy is a surgical procedure for the partial or complete removal of the colon. It is carried out for tumor diseases, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases or severe intestinal complications, among other things, and can be carried out openly or minimally invasively.

In the minimally invasive procedure, trocars, laparoscopes, cameras, light sources, fenestrated grasses, scissors, dissectors, monopolar instruments and needle holders can be used, among other things. While in an open procedure, instruments such as scalpels, scissors, clamps, retractors, tweezers and needle holders can be used.

Color contrast describes the difference in color reproduction between two areas of an image, allowing structures to be distinguished more clearly and recognized more easily. In high-quality endoscopes (laparoscopes, hysteroscopes, and arthroscopes), this is achieved through optimized optical fiber and lens configurations that enable especially true-to-color imaging and brilliant detail reproduction.

The color rendering index is a measure of how faithfully colors are reproduced under an artificial light source compared to natural daylight. A high CRI value is especially important in medical imaging, as it enables a realistic representation of tissue and anatomical structures.

Color Shift (CS1 / CS2) is an image processing function in endoscopic systems in which certain color components are shifted or intensified in a targeted manner to increase contrasts. The CS improved the visibility of structures and vessels and reduced red tones.

Colorectal surgery is a surgical specialty that deals with surgical procedures on the colon and rectum. It is used, among other things, to treat tumors, inflammatory bowel diseases or functional disorders of the intestine.

The RGB image is displayed in color, with the NIR fluorescence visible and overlaid in green. This is ideal for demarcating tissue structures as well as for assessing perfusion and visualizing the bile ducts.

The RGB image is displayed in color and overlaid with an NIR fluorescence display and a multi-colored intensity scale. This creates a high-contrast visualization of signal curves between weak and strong NIR signals.

Comedonian instruments are dermatological tools that are used to remove skin impurities from the pores in a controlled and hygienic manner. Due to their ring-shaped or loop-shaped ends, they allow targeted pressure on the skin, which gently drains the contents without unnecessarily damaging the tissue.

A condyle is a rounded articular prominence of a bone that serves as a joint surface and enables movement between two bones. It is covered with cartilage to ensure low-friction and stable joint motion.

A permanent flush shaft is a special endoscopic shaft system that allows continuous irrigation during the procedure to ensure clear visibility. It has separate channels for inflow and outflow, so that tissue and blood residues can be flushed out effectively.

Control parameters are adjustable technical variables in medical devices or systems that are used to control functions and operating states. They influence, for example, image representation, light intensity, gas flow or pressure and enable application-specific adjustment during the procedure.

Key figure for evaluating the color rendering quality of a light source, which indicates how lifelike colors are displayed compared to a reference light source (e.g. daylight). The value ranges from 0 to 100, with higher values meaning more realistic color reproduction.

Iridectomy scissors are fine ophthalmic surgical scissors that are specially used for the precise severing or removal of iris tissue during ophthalmological procedures. They are mainly used in ophthalmology, e.g. in iridectomies to relieve pressure or improve aqueous humor drainage, and are available in various straight or curved designs.

Cruciate ligament reconstruction is a surgical procedure in which a torn anterior or posterior cruciate ligament of the knee is replaced with a graft. The goal is to restore stability to the knee joint and allow normal joint function and load-bearing capacity. Instruments commonly used include an arthroscope, camera, light source, shaver, punches, suture passer, and knot pusher.

Cut-down refers to a surgical procedure in which a blood vessel is exposed through a targeted skin and tissue incision. The procedure is performed to enable direct vascular access, e.g. to the catheter, cannula or probe insertion, if a percutaneous puncture is not possible.

A cystoscope is a rigid medical endoscope that is used to visually examine the bladder and urethra, giving the doctor a direct, high-resolution view of the lower urinary tract. It is used in the context of diagnostic and therapeutic cysto-urethroscopy and, depending on the system, can accommodate additional instruments through working channels.

A cystoscope urethroscope shaft is a rigid outer shaft of an endoscopic system, which is used in urology for the insertion of endoscopes, working instruments and irrigation and suction channels into the urethra and bladder. It enables diagnostic and therapeutic cystoscopic and urethroscopic interventions by providing safe access to the surgical field and supporting controlled instrument guidance.

An endoscopic examination of the bladder and urethra using a cystoscope to visually assess the mucous membrane and diagnose abnormalities such as tumors, inflammation, or stones.

D

The date insert is a small insert element used in Sterisafe® containers to clearly and visibly mark the sterilization date or cycle information. It supports traceability and reliably documents when the container has been sterilized or how many cycles have already been completed.

For the targeted excision of damaged, infected or necrotic tissue, wound excision forceps are used as surgical cutting instruments. They enable controlled and precise debridement and support the creation of optimal conditions for wound healing.

Depth of field describes the range within an image that is simultaneously in focus, that is, how far the focus extends from front to back. A high depth of field enables clear visualization of both nearby and more distant structures and is particularly emphasized in high-quality endoscopes such as AlphaScope endoscopes.

A skin punch is a cylindrical surgical instrument with a sharp, circular cutting edge that is used to extract skin tissue in a targeted manner. It is mainly used in dermatology and surgery, for example for biopsies or the precise excision of small areas of skin, and is designed as a sterile, usually reusable instrument.

A dermatome is a surgical instrument used to extract uniform skin grafts of precisely defined thickness, for example for plastic-reconstructive procedures. Modern dermatomes usually work mechanically or electrically and enable precise, gentle tissue ablation.
